Annice Narcise is a longtime resident of Oak Island who has seen her share of hurricanes. Floyd was particularly tough on Narcise. It destroyed her newly renovated business and placed serious stresses on her health. But in the aftermath of the storm, she offers a refreshing perspective on what it takes to live at the edge of the sea. She was interviewed by telephone in July 2002.

"When the storm came in, or the eye hit, the water came up and all these boulders broke through the front windows. There were also these big metal railroad ties or something that went through one of the windows. We had about a foot of water inside. But when I got there, it was not water, it was all muck. We had about a foot of this garbage, sand, and muck. The sand and the boulders also covered the putt–putt."
