In Memoriam: William Friday, 1920-2012A note from John Sherer, director of UNC Press:
I had the privilege of meeting Bill Friday for the first time just last week. When I was an undergraduate at Chapel Hill in the 1980s, he was already a legendary figure, so it was more than a little daunting to be introduced to this man who cast such a large shadow on the academic life of the state.
As a long-time friend of UNC Press, he always wanted to explore ways the Press could promote the scholarship being done on the university campuses. He looked me in the eye and said, "Your university needs you--now more than ever."
That's a directive I will never forget, but I can't help but think how much this university needed him.
It is our public service at UNC Press to offer for a limited time--at no charge--access to Professor William Link's definitive biography of Bill, William Friday: Power, Purpose, and American Higher Education.
