UNC Press Titles for Readers with Disabilities

UNC Press is happy to provide digital files of adopted textbooks that have been assigned to students with disabilities. We will provide such a copy free of charge upon receipt of a formal request from the student's campus disability service office, on the condition that a copy of the book has been purchased by or on behalf of the student. To make a request, please email us.

UNC Press is proud to partner with several organizations to provide our books in a variety of formats for visually-disabled students and readers.

Bookshare is a non-profit organization that makes UNC Press books, as well as those from many other major publishers, accessible to students at colleges and universities with verified print disabilities. Bookshare offers books in DAISY(talking book file format) and digital Braille formats.

Bookshare is able to offer this service because of a copyright exemption provided by Section 121 of the U.S. Copyright Act, which permits organizations like Bookshare to provide copyrighted materials in specialized formats to people with qualifying disabilities. There is no charge for actively enrolled students to use titles available from the Bookshare alternative library. UNC Press provides Bookshare with digital files of many of its books to facilitate the conversion and provision of texts in the necessary formats.

Read How You Want offers a great selection of books in a wide range of large-type formats, e-books and formats for people who require different formats like Braille and DAISY. Print formats are optimized for readability so that readers can choose the format that suits them best.
